Commissioner's Corner: Mayor Malik
The New Year brought record high temperatures to our area with temperatures reaching into the 80’s, not a bad way to start the year! Having returned from a family vacation in the mountains of North Carolina and enjoying the incredible sights and tranquility of the scenery, the 20+ knot north winds, icy rain and cold temps made us all appreciate the mild winter weather of Cocoa Beach. I can’t imagine blizzards, icy roads and snowplows, etc. No Thank You!
It’s a New Year and time to make sure we keep our fittest city title! The Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge 2019 eight week period kicks off on February 2nd and runs through March 30th. Please join me and the rest of the City Team members to help Cocoa Beach remain the fittest City in Brevard County as we challenge twelve other Brevard County municipalities. As a participant, all you have to do is get moving and track your activity (remember surfing and skating counts!). To get more information and sign up, please go to www.uwbrevard.org, click on 2019 Mayors’ Fitness Challenge to register!
In other City news, Cocoa Beach Water Reclamation Director, Scott Barber retired after 38 years of service with an lengthy list of accomplishments; thank you Scott for all your dedication and hard work (especially the 24/7 periods of hurricane events)! Brad Kalsow was promoted to Water Reclamation Director to keep things running smoothly. Speaking of water, the city commission has put water quality at the top of our legislative priorities for 2019 for our State elected officials to ensure we have funding to clean up our waterways and to fix this once and for all (for a full list of 2019 legislative priorities, go to www.cityofcocoabeach.com January 3rd meeting agenda item)!
The parking garage is starting to take shape and will come in handy for events such as the Cocoa Beach Art Show and Surfing Santas. The parking garage is a CRA funded project with revenue bonds. (Cocoa Beach/Brevard County).
