Solar Lights for Channel Markers on Cocoa Beach Waterways
The City of Cocoa Beach Public Works Department has just completed the installation of solar channel marker lights at the entrances to all the main canals of our waterways. The lights have sensors and automatically turn on at night. Some of the lights can be seen from S.R. 520 as you drive in and out of town by the Hospital. You will see blinking red and green beacons on top of specific channel markers. They are a great aid to navigation for boaters at night and also add a little nautical ambience as you travel over the causeway in your car. The project was originated by the Waterways and Wildlife Advisory Board and permitted through the Coast Guard.
The pictures below show a few of the lights mounted on top of the marker pilings. PVC mounting extensions we made in house to cut costs. These extensions raise the lights above the channel marker placards which allows for viewing the lights from all directions. The batteries have a five year life before needing to be replaced. These solar lights will be utilized and enjoyed by everyone for many years to come!
