Minutemen Streetscape Update

This Sunday, April 10 is the Cocoa Beach Annual Triathlon. The event starts at the Country Club and moves down Minutemen Causeway.  For the safety of the athletes we will be putting in temporary paving (asphalt) at the intersection of Cedar and Minutemen, but the asphalt will be removed after the event  to do final work on that intersection before moving on. This temporary paving is to assure the safety of the bikes during the triathlon but the intersection is not finished.

There have been many questions on the pace of this project- we want to stress that installing a new waterline/replacing old waterline is a slow process and includes various required protocols/testing that takes time (bacterial testing, pressure testing, valve testing – along with construction safety measures) and there’s a sequence with wait times that must be adhered to legally.  The work must be done carefully and correctly and that doesn’t always mean quickly.   Much of the delay and work sluggishness of weeks past was due to this recent add-on waterline replacement project – separate from the streetscape/stormwater project – replacement of old waterlines is being done now while the roadway is under construction  so that there will be minimal need to disturb the MM corridor after this project is completed.

We understand that this project is inconvenient and disruptive but there’s no way to replace underground utilities without these sort of traffic impacts and again – better done carefully and correctly than quickly.
