Rip Current Warning
There has been a marked escalation in frequency and severity for emergency responses to the ocean beach for patrons caught in rip currents.
Recent storms have reshaped the ocean beach and near shore sandbars, increasing the risk of rip current formation. Deep troughs formed by those rip currents in the surf line can also cause you to lose your footing, and the ability to walk back to shore may become nearly impossible against the current.
Rip currents may spring up at any time and at any tide. Know what to look for and how to act regarding rip currents, and be aware of environmental factors as you plan your day at the beach. Keep accountability of all members in your beach party, especially small children and those with special needs.
Signs advising that a known rip current is present may be posted at guarded beaches, but there is no guarantee due to the sporadic nature of rip formation.
As always, swim near a lifeguard!
