Fischer Park Dune Restoration

Fischer Park beach access will be closed tomorrow 4/2/24 from 9 am-3 pm for an invasive plant removal and dune restoration project.

The invasive plants will be removed tomorrow and the area is expected to be fully replanted with beneficial native dune plants within 2 weeks.

More detail

Priority 1 Area: Removal of approximately 0.29 acres of invasive Brazilian pepper and coin vine. Invasive will be mulched to fine pieces and left on site to aid with weed control and will breakdown naturally over time. All beneficial native vegetation including sea grapes, saw palmetto, cabbage palm, etc. will be marked with flagging tape and left in place. The area will be replanted with a minimum of 10 native species. Woody vegetation will be planted in the back dune area. The frontal dune will be replanted with herbaceous vegetation planted 18 inches on staggered centers. The area will be hand-watered as needed until plants have established. Quarterly maintenance will occur to prevent invasive from reestablishing the area. The city is coordinating with the sea turtle nesting permit holder to ensure nesting activity is not disturbed. Priority 2 Areas: Removal of invasive species such as Brazilian pepper, schefflera, asparagus fern, carrot wood, etc.

Priority 2 areas are densely populated with well-established beneficial native vegetation, therefore replanting in these areas will not be necessary.
