Storm Update

Hurricane Milton

10.08.24

Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on Thursday, October 10th, 2024 overnight.

The City is working closely with Brevard County EOC as we monitor the storm's development.

Brevard County is now in a Hurricane Warning.

Now is the time to prepare your homes for any potential impact. The City anticipates power outages and flooding, especially in areas near canals due to elevated river levels from heavy rains. Power outages may disrupt elevators and cause fire alarms to go off.

Sand Availability:

  • The City has some sand available at the Cocoa Beach Country Club (east side of the building). Low-supply
  • Please bring your own bags and shovels. Bags are available for purchase at Ace Hardware.
  • An additional sandbag site will open at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, exclusively for Cocoa Beach residents (ID required for access).  The location is the Cocoa Beach High School West parking lot. _ Note the time for distribution is for the safety of students on campus.
  • Brevard County has sites available for sand from 8:00 am - 6:00 pm.

If you are unable to get the sandbags another option is to use topsoil and mulch bags from your local hardware store.

Water Usage: Please limit water use to essential activities like laundry and dishes before the storm. These activities add additional strain on the wastewater plant.

The Waste Water Plant is near capacity due to increased rainfall.

Additional Preparations:

  • Remove signs and decorations from yards.
  • Secure outdoor furniture.
  • Stock up on non-perishable food, water, and gas.
  • Do not do yard work that creates debris. Keep all debris out of storm drains, as clogged drains can cause additional flooding.

We will provide updates on CBNN, Facebook, X, and the City's website as new information becomes available.

Did you know?

As we prepare for hurricanes, it's essential to safeguard all types of electric vehicles—whether it's your car, e-bike, or scooter. Follow these steps to protect your investment from storm damage:

1.  Charge Everything Fully: Before the storm arrives, make sure all your electric vehicles are fully charged in case of power outages.

2. Park & Store Safely:

 - EVs: Park in a garage or a covered area. If you're in a flood zone, move your car to higher ground.

 - E-Bikes & Scooters: Store them indoors if possible, or at least elevate them to protect from flooding. If outside, secure them with waterproof covers and anchor them to prevent them from being blown away.

3. Unplug Chargers: After charging, unplug all chargers to prevent damage from power surges.

4. Remove Batteries: For electric scooters and bikes with removable batteries, take them out and store them in a dry, safe place.

5. Secure Home Charging Stations: For those with home charging stations, secure or store the charging equipment in a safe, dry location.

By taking these precautions, you’ll ensure your electric vehicles—big or small—are ready to weather the storm!
