Hurricane Season Peak Approaches
DID YOU KNOW?
September 10 is the historical peak date of the Atlantic Hurricane Season.
While the season runs June 1 – November 30, the greatest number of tropical systems typically develop in the weeks around this date.
We currently have systems in the Atlantic, and this is the time to be vigilant. Conditions can change quickly, and storm paths may shift with little notice.
LOOKING BACK: 2004–2006
2004: Four hurricanes in six weeks. Frances and Jeanne both struck the east coast in September, bringing widespread impacts to Cocoa Beach and surrounding areas.
2005: Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma crossed the state, showing how quickly storms can develop and intensify.
2006: A quieter year, but Tropical Storms Alberto and Ernesto still brought heavy rain and gusty winds.
These years serve as an important reminder: peak season is when our community is most at risk.
WHAT TO DO NOW
Take time this week to prepare, just as you would if a storm were on the way:
Emergency Supplies – Have at least 7 days of food, water, and medications for each family member and pets.
Secure Your Home – Check shutters, clear gutters, trim trees, and secure loose outdoor items.
Fuel & Cash – Keep vehicles fueled and have cash on hand in case of power outages.
Important Documents – Store insurance papers, IDs, and medical information in a waterproof container.
Stay Informed – Sign up for city alerts, follow trusted weather updates, and know your evacuation routes.
Special Needs – Make sure elderly family members, those with medical needs, and pets have a plan.
STAY PREPARED – STAY SAFE
The peak is here, but the season continues into November. Preparing now keeps our families and community resilient.
