Storm prep City of Cocoa beach

A Message from Our Water Reclamation Department

Even unnamed storms can impact our wastewater system, and this weekend was a reminder of that.

Our Water Reclamation team works hard to keep things flowing smoothly, but sometimes heavy rain and flooding make it necessary for us to ask for your help: reducing water use.

Your actions before, during, and after a storm make a big difference in keeping our system healthy!

How it works

How the Wastewater System Works

Our wastewater system depends on gravity to move water through underground pipes to the treatment plant. Along the way, lift stations (collection points) help push the flow where it needs to go.

After a storm, the system can get overwhelmed due to:

  • Floodwaters entering the pipes
  • Power outages affecting pumps
  • Physical damage to equipment

When this happens, wastewater can build up at lift stations, leading to overflows from manholes or even backups into homes.

how to help

How You Can Help

Before a Storm

If a storm is on the way, try to finish your water-heavy chores early:

  • Run your dishwasher
  • Do your laundry
  • Take care of any other water using chores

During and After a Storm

If the City asks you to limit water use, please help by:

  • Take shorter showers
  • Flush only when necessary
  • Hold off on laundry and dishwashing
  • Turn off tap while brushing teeth or shaving
  • Use disposable plates and utensils to cut down on dishwashing
  • Make sure your sewer cleanout cap is secure to keep stormwater out
Why it matters

Why It Matters

Our wastewater system relies on a functional treatment plant. Treatment plants clean wastewater before use. When the system is overwhelmed or damaged, untreated water can spill into the lagoon, overflow from manholes, or even back into your home.

Protecting our wastewater system protects our community health and local waterways.

Psst...While We're Discussing...

Let's keep our Wastewater System healthy year-round.

Never Flush These Items:

  • Wipes, diapers, or cleaning pads
  • Feminine products
  • Paper towels, tissues, or kitty litter
  • Dental floss, Q-tips, hair, or cigarette butts

These items can clog pipes, damage pumps, and make storm-related issues worse
