Storm Prep Sunday

Storm Prep Sunday Recap – October
Staying Ready, Together in Cocoa Beach

As neighbors, we know that preparation and teamwork keep our community strong during storm season. Throughout October, our City departments shared weekly “Storm Prep Sunday” reminders to help everyone stay safe, informed, and ready for whatever the weather brings.

Here’s a quick recap of what we covered this month — and a reminder that staying prepared is a year-round effort here in Cocoa Beach.

As hurricane season comes to a close, we want to thank our residents, businesses, and city teams for staying alert and prepared all year long. Your efforts—big and small—make a real difference in keeping Cocoa Beach safe and resilient. While the season may be ending, preparedness never stops. Take a moment to restock, review, and stay ready for whatever comes next.

Thank you for being a part of a community that looks out for one another. Together, we weather every season.

— Your Cocoa Beach Team

E-Bikes, Golf Carts & Battery Safety

E-bikes, scooters, and golf carts are great for getting around town — but remember that lithium-ion batteries can pose fire risks if exposed to water or flooding.

recap

Before the Storm

  • Unplug and power off all e-bikes, carts, and other battery-operated vehicles.
  • Move vehicles to higher ground - avoid garages, carports, or sheds that could flood.
  • Do not charge batteries during a storm or when flooding is possible.
  • Never store batteries on the floor.
  • If evacuating, avoid driving through standing water.

A Message from Water Reclamation

Even smaller storms can impact the wastewater system. Heavy rain and flooding can overload pumps and pipes. (We saw what could happen with a heavy rain this month!)

how to help

How You Can Help

Before a Storm

If a storm is on the way, try to finish your water-heavy chores early:

  • Run your dishwasher
  • Do your laundry
  • Take care of any other water using chores

During and After a Storm

If the City asks you to limit water use, please help by:

  • Take shorter showers
  • Flush only when necessary
  • Hold off on laundry and dishwashing
  • Turn off tap while brushing teeth or shaving
  • Use disposable plates and utensils to cut down on dishwashing
  • Make sure your sewer cleanout cap is secure to keep stormwater out
why it matters

Why It Matters

Our wastewater system relies on a functional treatment plant. Treatment plants clean wastewater before use. When the system is overwhelmed or damaged, untreated water can spill into the lagoon, overflow from manholes, or even back into your home.

Protecting our wastewater system protects our community health and local waterways.

A Message from Stormwater

Our storm drains are vital to keeping streets clear and homes protected. You can help by keeping them free of debris.
• Do not place branches, yard waste, or trash in curbs, streets, or near storm drains.
• Use yard-waste collection or approved drop-off locations.
• Clear drains around your property to reduce flooding and protect the Indian River Lagoon.

As you saw this past month, a storm doesn’t necessarily mean a hurricane. During the large rain event that caused flooding within the city, it was clear that together, these small steps make a big difference in keeping Cocoa Beach safe, resilient, and ready for whatever the season brings. Thank you for being a part of our #CocoaBeachReady community!
