COMMISSIONERS CORNER:
Mike Miller
As I prepare for the new year, I am extremely thankful to be a member of the Cocoa Beach community. I am thankful to live in a beautiful place with access to nature and outdoor recreation. And, I am thankful that we have a non-partisan election for city commission that allows us to focus on the betterment of our community.
With the 2016 elections behind us, I would like to congratulate Ben Malik and Ed Martinez on being confirmed as dedicated leaders of our city. I would also like to congratulate the first time candidates for Commission Seat 3. All conducted positive campaigns and expressed confidence in voters to determine who bests represent their own values. I look forward to working with our newly elected commissioners and city staff on legislative priorities important to the citizens of Cocoa Beach. There are three main areas I look forward to working on this coming year.
Downtown Redevelopment
Cocoa Beach is blessed with long enduring and successful businesses in the downtown. I believe those existing businesses would benefit by filling empty storefronts to create a walking retail destination.
City Hall / Police Headquarters
The existing buildings are 50 years old and have outgrown the capability to support new technology. I believe we need to design new buildings that reflect changing business practices. Our workspaces should be designed to capitalize on technology and collaboration to better streamline city services for the citizens of Cocoa Beach.
Leisure Services
Leisure Services includes golf, tennis, swimming, gymnasium, public parks, and the sports fields we share with Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School. Our recreational facilities are invaluable assets for the city. However, I believe we can make them more functionally and financially accountable to the citizens of Cocoa Beach.
Lastly, I am thankful we live in a vibrant and supportive community. I hope to see you at the Surfing Santa’s and other holiday events.
