Commissioner's Corner: Vice Mayor Skip Williams

The City Charter Review process is continuing to finalize proposed Referendums that will come to you voters at this November’s election. The second Public Workshop was held on May 29th and so far, there may be only two referendums on the ballot from the three discussed for you to fully consider and vote on.
The first one was overcome by the discussions at the workshop. The Referendum would have changed Section 6.04 Building Height Limits from our current 45 feet building height limit to 70 feet plus 8 feet of roof top appurtenances and base elevation including reducing the current 5-0 vote to 4-1 vote of the Commission to allow future changes for increases of height.
The second referendum was left unchanged that would clean up the Charter overall with language revisions, restructuring of content and additional definitions.
The third referendum, which I have been proposing, was expanded to include an additional allowance for up to 10 feet of roof top appurtenances. My original language remains, which was to revise Section 6.08 Building Height Accommodations. This would allow relief in Section 6.04 based on Laws that have changed, such as FEMA Base Flood Elevations, since our current Building Height Limit went into effect in 2002. It will also provide accommodations for Federal, State, County or Local laws that could change in the future. The language includes vacant property and existing buildings.
Your Commission will continue the City Charter Review process and will eventually vote on the final language of each Referendum for this November’s ballot. Our next scheduled Commission meeting is on June 7th at 7:00 pm. In this democratic process, you will make the final decisions with your votes. You can continue to participate in the process by staying up-to-date on the final language and voting on each Referendum in this November’s election.
As always, I thank you for the honor of serving as your commissioner and hope you have a great Summer, Skip. (Email skip.williams@cityofcocoabeach.com , my home phone is 783-1850).
